With large cargo freighters being a major source of CO2 emissions worldwide it's been encouraging to see various efforts to make such vessels more efficient. In recent years we've seen the development of the world's biggest container ship to cut CO2 emissions per container moved, air bubbles used to cut the friction between a ship's hull and the ocean, and even plans to return to the use of sails to cut fuel use. Now Nissan has launched an energy efficient coastal car carrier called the Nichio Maru that employs solar panels, LED lighting, a low friction hull coating hull and an electronically controlled diesel engine to cut fuel consumption.

The newly built Nichio Maru began its maiden voyage on January 7, 2012, and is the first coastal cargo ship in Japan to have photovoltaic solar panels installed. There are 281 solar panels in all, fitted to the ship's deck and used to power the LED lighting installed in the ship's hold and crew quarters.


Other energy efficiency features include the electronically controlled diesel engine that gives the 169.95 m (557 ft) long, 26 m (85 ft) wide vessel an operating speed of 21.2 knots (24.5 mph/39 km/h), and the use of a low friction hull coating that provides better sea mileage.

Tilera has announced the availability of its new 36-core processor, which it claims can root the floor with x86 server chips at least in terms of performance-per-watt.

Named the Tile-GX36, the chip is designed for use in servers that handle large volumes of internet transactions.

TILE-Gx CPUs come in 16, 36, 64 and 100-core variants, with the first two being the focus of today’s attention. All of the chips share a unique architecture, you can read about it here, and have a very unique network architecture. Each core has six network links to the four adjacent tiles, 24 total, with each link dedicated to a specific function. Tilera calls this CPU + network node a tile, and it is the basic building block for their architecture. The two smaller and two larger chips each share a common set of uncore components.

With this many cores, you probably don’t need much convincing to believe that each core isn’t capable of much raw single threaded computation, but that isn’t the idea. Virus' StayWarm line uses what it calls Coffee Char, or coffee charcoal in the construction of the fabric. The grounds are recycled and processed into a natural fiber to produce a comfortable base layer fabric that traps heat close to the skin.

According to Virus, tests have shown that the garments' heat trap increases surface temperature by 10 degrees Fahrenheit and no chemical treatments or applications are used to provide these insulation properties.

While Stay Warm keeps you warm, it still wicks moisture away from skin. When body heat turns up the temperature and perspiration levels, additional features of the garment kick in. These include UV shielding and anti-odor properties that fight stink - a function that the company says is due to the selection of compounds woven into the fabric that deter the growth of microbes.

He clarified so beware of vendors trying to sell something that it says could protect the Android, BlackBerry, or iOS, because maybe it was just a hoax.



Although he did not mention any antivirus vendor company, the comments could be directed at Symantec, McAfee F-Secure, and Kaspersky.

Dibona went on to say that no phone is suffering from a virus problem as experienced Windows and some Mac software. Security breach that occurred was not too far because of the use of the sandbox model and the nature of the underlying kernel.

An ingenious researcher at the London Centre for Nanotechnology has managed to squeeze a bunch of photovoltaic (solar power) cells into a very interesting location: Behind your smartphone’s display.

According to Arman Ahnood, who unveiled his findings at the Materials Research Society late last year, only 36% of the light produced by an OLED display is projected straight out; the rest is wasted, either as scattered light or bleeding from the edge of the display. In a fairly basic leap of logic, Ahnood created photovoltaic cells that line the back and sides of OLED screens to capture this wasted light: Voila, free, harvested energy that can then be used to power the phone or charge the battery.

The best bit, though, is that Ahnood’s cells take the form of a thin film, much like OLED and LCD displays themselves. The idea is to bond this photovoltaic layer to the stack of films that make up an OLED display (pictured below), ultimately producing OLED screens that automatically harvest wasted light. Furthermore, because OLED and LCDs are not completely opaque, these thin-film photovoltaics also gather ambient light, be it from overhead lights or the sun.


Ahnood’s system — which includes a supercapacitor and some circuitry — has an average efficiency of 11%; significantly lower than commercial photovoltaics that are reaching 30%, but remember that’s free energy. For a typical 3.7-inch smartphone screen, the system can currently output a total of five milliwatts; again, not a lot (maybe a hundredth of what a modern smartphone uses), but better than nothing.

(AFP) WARSAW — Hackers identifying themselves as the "Polish Underground" took down the Polish government website early on Monday, the most recent in a series of attacks protesting against anti-piracy legislation.

At the weekend, the computer hacker group Anonymous launched attacks on official websites belonging to the Polish president, prime minister and parliament, also in protest against the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA).

Poland has committed itself to signing the planned multi-lateral agreement aimed at creating international standards for intellectual property protection, but had not consulted with the public over the issue.

On the heels of the attacks, Michal Boni, Poland's digitisation minister, admitted there was "a need for dialogue and consultation here in Poland" on ACTA, already signed by the United States and other non-EU states.

"Hacked by the Polish Underground: Stop ACTA," appeared on the website of Poland's centrist Prime Minister Donald Tusk early on Monday.

The hackers also posted a tongue-in-cheek video of a man in a military uniform and dark glasses resembling Poland's communist-era General Jaruzelski announcing his regime's December 1981 martial law crackdown on the freedom-fighting Solidarity trade union.

"This morning the content on the www.kprm.gov.pl website was modified. As a result the server was switched off and secured," a Polish government statement said of the attack Monday.

"The site will be transferred to another server during the course of the day," it said.

US authorities have seized more than 350 website domain names since launching an anti-online piracy campaign dubbed "Operation in Our Sites" more than 18 months ago, including a spectacular global swoop on file-sharing site Megaupload.com.

But US congressional leaders put strict anti-online piracy legislation on hold following a recent wave of protests led by Google and Wikipedia denouncing the bills as a threat to Internet freedom.

Report: Vevo Leaving YouTube for Facebook

Facebook is reportedly in talks to replace YouTube as the host of Vevo's music videos, CNet is reporting.

Citing sources with knowledge of the discussions, CNet said Facebook and Vevo have already met about a potential deal at least twice, with the most recent meeting happening in the last two weeks. Vevo still has one year left on its current contract with YouTube.

Facebook would stream Vevo's music videos, and the companies would share revenue from ad sales. CNet said the deal would be similar to the one Vevo currently has with YouTube.

NEC Corporation announced about a new record for communication using 1.15-Tb/s ultra-long haul optical transmission over 10,000 kilometers using optical superchannel technology. In total, four lasers were used simultaneously to transmit 4Tbps down a single optic fiber.

According to The Verge, NEC's network reached speeds of 1.15Tbps and traveled over 10,000 kilometers; multiple superchannels were also combined for a total speed of 4Tbps.

The Verge also added that Superchannels have been in the works for a few years, and NEC's work doesn't look revolutionary — experiments by other groups have been able to reach terabit speeds at up to 10,000 km.

Nicolaus Steno was born in Copenhagen on New Year's Day (Julian calendar) Died 25 November 1686 (aged 48), the son of a Lutheran goldsmith who worked regularly for King Christian IV of Denmark. Stensen grew up in isolation in his childhood, because of an unknown disease.

He is considered the father of geology and stratigraphy.  Steno was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1987. wikipedia

First images of a new HTC smartphone have emerge online and they are thought to be of the HTC Radiant.

The HTC Radiant is a new Windows smartphone that will be available on AT&T in the US.

According to the website Pocketnow HTC Radiant specs (with the 1.5GHz CPU, 512MB of RAM and definitely the same sized WVGA screen like on the Titan). Because of the LTE capability, the 1,600mAh battery on the Titan should definitely be improved on the Radiant in order to power both the radio and the huge 4.7-inch display.
