HP WebOS Source Code under an Open Sourced

Open Source Developer Program, HP printers, desktops, laptops, servers, storage, HP to Contribute webOS to Open Source, hp touchpad, hp touchpad webos, palm pre webos, webos android

Hewlett-Packard has announced the Open Source Project on webOS. The code will be available under an open source license but it seems that it is yet to be finalized what license will be used.

WebOS may be more clever that we esteem. The Linux-based OS with a rocky history has officially risen from the ashes of HP’s TouchPad bungle to be reborn as an open source project.

Various versions of WebOS have been featured on several devices, including Pre, Pixi, and Veer phones and the HP TouchPad tablet.

From Press Release:

HP today announced it will contribute the webOS software to the open source community.

HP plans to continue to be active in the development and support of webOS. By combining the innovative webOS platform with the development power of the open source community, there is the opportunity to significantly improve applications and web services for the next generation of devices.

webOS offers a number of benefits to the entire ecosystem of web applications. For developers, applications can be easily built using standard web technologies. In addition, its single integrated stack offers multiplatform portability. For device manufacturers, it provides a single web-centric platform to run across multiple devices. As a result, the end user benefits from a fast, immersive user experience.

“webOS is the only platform designed from the ground up to be mobile, cloud-connected and scalable,” said Meg Whitman, HP president and chief executive officer. “By contributing this innovation, HP unleashes the creativity of the open source community to advance a new generation of applications and devices.”

HP will make the underlying code of webOS available under an open source license. Developers, partners, HP engineers and other hardware manufacturers can deliver ongoing enhancements and new versions into the marketplace.

HP will engage the open source community to help define the charter of the open source project under a set of operating principles.

The goal of the project is to accelerate the open development of the webOS platform:
HP will be an active participant and investor in the project
Good, transparent and inclusive governance to avoid fragmentation
Software will be provided as a pure open source project

HP G60-630US 15.6-inch Laptop Review

HP G60 630US.jpg
The Hewlett Packard G60-630US is a versatile laptop that looks great and feels great to use too, especially because of the numeric keypad and full size keyboard, making data entry and typing an absolute breeze. Something you certainly wouldn't find on a netbook like the HP Mini Note 5101.

The integrated Intel graphics chip does in normal operation, the work satisfactorily and energy efficient. I alway watch movies and play casual games, Even with modern games (The sims3) no visible judder. Fan consistently quiet if one does not, or holds a similar task for the computer. The keyboard (unfortunately without number pad), well made, quiet (subjective opinion). The touch pad is framed into the case, makes a good impression. Switch it off with tap in the upper left corner. Multi-touch gestures (leaves, call a particular program) it can handle.

HP Elitebook 8760w Review +Specs

The HP EliteBook 8760w offers a 17.3-inch diagonal, high-definition (HD) screen, a choice of high-performing AMD FirePro or nVidia Quadro professional graphics and up to 4GB of video memory. The NVIDIA Quadro 5010M is a much more incremental update to its predecessor than the GeForce GTX 485M was to the 480M, though I suspect NVIDIA opted to continue using GF1x0 for their top shelf mobile workstation GPU due to its superior HPC capabilities.

HP EliteBook 8760w will be available with 17.3-inch screen with a resolution of 1600 x 900 or 1920 x 1080 pixels, and powered by an Intel Core or Intel Core i7-2920XM/2820QM/2720QM/230QM/2620M i5-2540M/2520M. In addition, this laptop also has a 750GB storage and 16GB of DDR3 RAM.

The EliteBook 8760w is also MIL-STD 810G business-rugged and has a gunmetal gray exterior design. Having been a user of the now-outdated EliteBook 8740w for 5 months (and used other various other models), I can testify that fact: the EliteBooks are built like tanks and run like sports cars.

Dual boot Installation of Ubuntu Linux on HP TouchPad

Ubuntu Linux and Android Could Give HP's TouchPad, Install Ubuntu Linux on HP TouchPad [Dual boot]
How can install Ubuntu Linux on HP TouchPad?

Running Ubuntu Linux on the HP TouchPad has already been made possible, although its not very easy for the beginners. It involves partitioning the storage space on the tablet, and Dual booting.

Pre-requisite: Install Preware
PreWare is an app store for homebrew apps that are not on webOS App Catalog, just like 3rd party markets on android or Cydia on iOS. For installation, you can follow Internals Wiki. To summarize, you would either need Official HP SDK and using the webOS Quick Install tool, or you can even use using a standalone installer.
1. Install Meta doctor
Refer to Guide: Set up Meta-Doctor
Summary of what you need to do:
  • On Mac OS X or Linux, install Git and Java runtime, install Palm Novacom software, and download the meta-doctor scripts.
  • Download and run the webOS Doctor.
  • Create an ext3fs partition on your device (chrooting), ideally it should be large enough to accomodate a Ubuntu install, 4gb min.
  • Then mount the ext3fs partition when your device boots. (More instructions at the PreCentral forums).
2. UbuntuChroot
Refer to Guide: UbuntuChroot
Summary:
  • In PreWare, make sure the WebOS Internals Testing Feeds are enabled.
  • Install Xecutah and Ubuntu 11.04 CHroot.
  • Run XServer.
  • Return to Xecutah and tap Ubuntu 11.04 Chroot.
Enabling Graphical Ubuntu.
If you made it to here, you will have full access to Ubuntu CLI. To get the graphical interface, use apt-get install to install Ubuntu packages. Run either of the following:
apt-get install icewm Xfce
apt-get install icewm LXDE
Running Gnome, KDE
You can install your favorite GUI its just that they are more resource hungry (more prominently RAM) and you don’t really want to kill your tablet.
App compatibility
When downloading an app, just look for ARM compatible ones. If you are a developer & find an open source app that doesn’t have a ARM binary, you can always build it for ARM architecture.
