Twitter Joins the Linux Foundation Reports

Online social networking service and microblogging service Twitter Joining the Linux Foundation.

From Pcworld:

Following in the footsteps of Broadcom, Nvidia, and Samsung--all of which joined the nonprofit consortium recently--none other than Twitter will announce on Tuesday that it is joining the foundation as well.

“Linux and its ability to be heavily tweaked is fundamental to our technology infrastructure,” said Chris Aniszczyk, manager of open source for the social networking giant. “By joining the Linux Foundation we can support an organization that is important to us and collaborate with a community that is advancing Linux as fast as we are improving Twitter.”

Twitter's Aniszczyk will deliver a keynote entitled “The OSS Behind a Tweet” at the foundation's LinuxCon conference in San Diego next week.

HP WebOS Source Code under an Open Sourced

Open Source Developer Program, HP printers, desktops, laptops, servers, storage, HP to Contribute webOS to Open Source, hp touchpad, hp touchpad webos, palm pre webos, webos android

Hewlett-Packard has announced the Open Source Project on webOS. The code will be available under an open source license but it seems that it is yet to be finalized what license will be used.

WebOS may be more clever that we esteem. The Linux-based OS with a rocky history has officially risen from the ashes of HP’s TouchPad bungle to be reborn as an open source project.

Various versions of WebOS have been featured on several devices, including Pre, Pixi, and Veer phones and the HP TouchPad tablet.

From Press Release:

HP today announced it will contribute the webOS software to the open source community.

HP plans to continue to be active in the development and support of webOS. By combining the innovative webOS platform with the development power of the open source community, there is the opportunity to significantly improve applications and web services for the next generation of devices.

webOS offers a number of benefits to the entire ecosystem of web applications. For developers, applications can be easily built using standard web technologies. In addition, its single integrated stack offers multiplatform portability. For device manufacturers, it provides a single web-centric platform to run across multiple devices. As a result, the end user benefits from a fast, immersive user experience.

“webOS is the only platform designed from the ground up to be mobile, cloud-connected and scalable,” said Meg Whitman, HP president and chief executive officer. “By contributing this innovation, HP unleashes the creativity of the open source community to advance a new generation of applications and devices.”

HP will make the underlying code of webOS available under an open source license. Developers, partners, HP engineers and other hardware manufacturers can deliver ongoing enhancements and new versions into the marketplace.

HP will engage the open source community to help define the charter of the open source project under a set of operating principles.

The goal of the project is to accelerate the open development of the webOS platform:
HP will be an active participant and investor in the project
Good, transparent and inclusive governance to avoid fragmentation
Software will be provided as a pure open source project

How to Set Up a Ubuntu 11.10 in Mac/OSX

How to Set Up a Ubuntu 11.10 in Mac/OSX, intall
Ubuntu Desktop 11.10, code-named Oneiric Ocelot, is the latest stable release of Ubuntu, a Linux distribution whose development is sponsored by Canonical Ltd., a Linux software provider with headquarters in the UK.

Aside from Ubuntu, Canonical also sponsors Kubuntu (based on KDE, the K Desktop Environment), Lubuntu (LXDE, the Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment), Xubuntu (Xfce), Mythbuntu (built around MythTV), Edubuntu (education-oriented packages) and Ubuntu Studio (centered around multimedia packages).

32- and 64-bit editions of all are released at or about the same time. Ubuntu provides three different installation ISO images for download – Ubuntu Desktop Graphical Installer (CD image), Ubuntu Desktop Alternate Installer (CD image), and Ubuntu Desktop DVD edition. This review is based on test installations of the 32-bit versions of all three on real hardware and in a virtual environment. Keep in mind that the DVD and Graphical Installer images use the same installer. The DVD edition just contains more language packs.

To install Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot on your iMac / Mac Book, yo need to download rEFIt, a free boot menu manager. rEFIt is a boot menu and maintenance toolkit for Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) based machines like the Intel Macs. You can use it to boot multiple operating systems easily, including triple-boot setups with Boot Camp. It also provides an easy way to enter and explore the EFI pre-boot environment. You can download it from here.

Steps to install rEFIt:

1. Download and mount the rEFIt-0.14.dmg disk image.
2. Double-click on the “rEFIt.mpkg” package.
3. Follow the instructions and select your Mac OS X installation volume as the destination volume for the install.

After installing rEFIt, yo will create a partition with Disk Utility to install Ubuntu.

Now insert the Ubuntu CD in the CD/DVD drive. Hold down ‘C’ button to boot from CD and then click ‘Install’. Restart your Mac and thats it! you made it!. Don’t forget to create the Swap partition to enable hibernation.

Install Ubuntu 11.10 in Window 7 via VirtualBox

Linux is one of the most secure and stable operating systems around, and yet, its user base hasn’t really grown as everyone expected it to.

How to setup Ubuntu 11.10 in Windows7 using VirtualBox: Installing Ubuntu alongside Windows7 as dual boot is a bit tedious for beginners. So here is a cool tip to virtually install Ubuntu 11.10 in Windows7 and experience every aspect of this new release with out actually creating a separate partition for Ubuntu installation.

To virtually install Ubuntu 11.10 in Windows7, we need Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager. You can download it from here. Also we need an ISO of the latest Ubuntu distribution. After installing, launch the VM VirtualBox Manager and create a new virtual machine by clicking the ‘New’ button on the top left menu.

How to install Ubuntu 11.10 in Windows7 using VirtualBox

In the VM name OS type box, type Ubuntu and click next. Accept all onscreen alerts without changing any settings and proceed to the last stage in virtual machine creation. Once done, you get the following screen:

Install Ubuntu 11.10

Go to Settings Storage and add CD/DVD device as shown below to mount the ISO of Ubuntu 11.10 from your hard disk.

Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager Ubuntu Settings

Click the ‘Start’ button to the right of ‘Settings’ button. Ubuntu 11.10 will now be virtually mounted on the screen and and will prompt you to either try or install.

Ubuntu Running Oracle VM VirtualBox

If you click ‘Try’, it will be similar to running on a live CD. If you choose to install, the procedures are similar to what you generally do while installing Ubuntu in a new partition. Just follow the onscreen instructions without changing any settings and Ubuntu 11.10 will be installed on your Windows7 based PC.

Restart the Virtual machine and now enjoy Ubuntu 11.10 with full visual effects and its revamped Unity look.

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS - Precise Pangolin Mascot Unveiled

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Is The Precise Pangolin, mascot, photo, ubuntu 12.04 LTS, picture, download ubuntu 12.04, pangolin download, the pangolin, giant pangolin, pangolin sql, african pangolin
Canonical founder Mark Richard Shuttleworth has just revealed that the codename for the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Linux release is the "Precise Pangolin", which will succeed the soon-to-be-released Ubuntu 11.10 "Oneiric Ocelot" version.

Precise Pangolin (PP) will give developers a bit more room to work with in the install image for 12.04, as the decision was made to increase the build to 750MB. This 50 megabyte increase means that the install will no longer fit onto CD media, forcing users to either burn to a DVD or use a memory stick to install the OS. This was to be expected and honestly nothing major as DVD burners are now the norm. The only issue will be builds that use older hardware for server purposes or storage, a simple thing to work around.

Blog Mark Shuttleworth has revealed the Ubuntu 12.04 a.k.a. 'Precise Pangolin. Below is the key part from Mark's post.

Let’s ask the question differently – what are we trying to convey? 12.04 is an LTS. So we want it to be tough and long-lasting, reliable, solid as a rock and well defended. It’s also going to be the face of Ubuntu for large deployments for a long time, so we want it to have no loose ends, we want it to be coherent, neat.

We’ve told the story of the cloud in previous releases, and that comes to fruition in 12.04 with the first LTS that supports both the cloud guest, and cloud infrastructure, across ARM and x86 architectures. We’ve also told the story of Unity in previous releases, and that comes to fruition in a fast, lean interface that works well across clients both thick and thin. 12.04 is going to be a lot more than all that, but for the full reveal, you’ll need to wait till UDS! Nevertheless, we can take reliability, precision, and polish as a given.

Balancing all of those options, I think we have just the right mix in our designated mascot for 12.04 LTS. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Precise Pangolin.

Now, I’ve recently spent a few hours tracking a pangolin through the Kalahari. I can vouch for their precision – there wasn’t an ant hill in the valley that he missed. Their scales are a wonder of detail and quite the fashion statement. I can also vouch for their toughness; pangolin’s regularly survive encounters with lions. All in all, a perfect fit. There’s no sassier character, and no more cheerful digger, anywhere in those desert plains. If you want a plucky partner, the pangolin’s your match. Let’s pack light for a wonderful adventure together. See you in Orlando!

Linux Ubuntu to serve in Android Apps, Smart TV, Smartphones

application android, blackberry application, android app, app store, ipad app, Smart TV

From Mark Shuttleworth Blog, owner of Canonical and  leader of Ubuntu development.

By 14.04 LTS Ubuntu will power tablets, phones, TVs and smart screens from the car to the office kitchen, and it will connect those devices cleanly and seamlessly to the desktop, the server and the cloud.

Unity, the desktop interface in today’s Ubuntu 11.10, was designed with this specific vision in mind. While the interface for each form factor is shaped appropriately, Unity’s core elements are arranged in exactly the way we need to create coherence across all of those devices. This was the origin of the name Unity – a single core interface framework, that scales across all screens, and supports all toolkits.

Canonical and the Ubuntu community have established Ubuntu’s place in desktop, server and cloud deployments. We have also invested in the design and engineering of Unity, motivated by the belief that desktop interfaces would merge with mobile, touch interfaces into a seamless personal computing platform in the future. Today we are inviting the whole Ubuntu community – both commercial and personal – to shape that possibility and design that future; a world where Ubuntu runs on mobile phones, tablets, televisions and traditional PC’s, creating a world where content is instantly available on all devices, in a form that is delightful to use.

A constantly changing world

The way we access the Internet, connect to our friends, listen to music, watch films and go about our daily lives is rapidly evolving. We now use a diverse set of devices with an array of operating systems, which have a range of connectivity. Few people are exclusively loyal to a single technology provider.

Consider this quote from Paul Maritz of VMWare:

“Three years ago over 95 percent of the devices connected to the Internet were personal computers. Three years from now that number will probably be less than 20 percent. More than 80 percent of the devices connected to the Internet will not be Windows-based personal computers.” Paul Maritz, 29 August 2011 VM World Keynote.

Make no mistake – just as the world is changing for manufacturers so is it changing for Linux distributions. Today, 70% of people in Egypt access the Internet solely via the phone. Even in the US that figure is a startling 25%. Ubuntu website:

Red Hat Acquire Cloud Storage Gluster Inc.

Red Hat Buys Cloud Storage Vendor Gluster for approximately $136 million (£88m) in cash to boost its cloud offerings.

Red Hat, the Linux software and services company, has made a bold move into the storage software business with the acquisition of Gluster, whose open-source storage file system for unstructured data runs a growing number of new-generation IT companies.

The latest version of the virtual appliance file system for data storage enables access to the same data as both an object and as a file – a huge perk for storage managers.
Red Hat Acquire Cloud Storage Gluster Inc.
GlusterFS 3.3 allows users to access data as objects from an Amazon S3-compatible interface and access files from a Network Attached Storage (NAS) interface, including Network File System (NFS) and Common Internet File System (CIFS).

For infrastructure as a service (IaaS) providers, GlusterFS 3.3 enables organisations to build their own Amazon-like storage offerings for their customers. Companies can use GlusterFS to accelerate the process of preparing applications for the cloud, simplify new application development for cloud computing environments, and back up data centre unified files and objects to Amazon Web Services (AWS) or to a private cloud.

Linux.com is Halt, due to security breach

Linux Foundation down after hack, Linux sites still down after security breach
Linux sites still down after security breach.

From Linux.com

Linux Foundation infrastructure including LinuxFoundation.org, Linux.com, and their subdomains are down for maintenance due to a security breach that was discovered on September 8, 2011. The Linux Foundation made this decision in the interest of extreme caution and security best practices. We believe this breach was connected to the intrusion on kernel.org.

We are in the process of restoring services in a secure manner as quickly as possible. As with any intrusion and as a matter of caution, you should consider the passwords and SSH keys that you have used on these sites compromised. If you have reused these passwords on other sites, please change them immediately. We are currently auditing all systems and will update this statement when we have more information.

We apologize for the inconvenience. We are taking this matter seriously and appreciate your patience. The Linux Foundation infrastructure houses a variety of services and programs including Linux.com, Open Printing, Linux Mark, Linux Foundation events and others, but does not include the Linux kernel or its code repositories.

Please contact us at info@linuxfoundation.org with questions about this matter.

A team of jailbreak developers has recently managed to install the Linux desktop operating system on Apple’s A4 equipped iOS devices. The news comes as the image of an iPad running Linux was tweeted by one of the team’s developers.

A while back, we told you how the iPad was already more popular that Linux computers (in North America). Now, the two have “come together” thanks to the hard work of @BluerisEN et. al. The aforementioned tweet, which hit the Web several days ago, read:

So, we finally got Linux running on a mirror. http://ponyfac.es/1http://twitpic.com/6ayscz

Dual boot Installation of Ubuntu Linux on HP TouchPad

Ubuntu Linux and Android Could Give HP's TouchPad, Install Ubuntu Linux on HP TouchPad [Dual boot]
How can install Ubuntu Linux on HP TouchPad?

Running Ubuntu Linux on the HP TouchPad has already been made possible, although its not very easy for the beginners. It involves partitioning the storage space on the tablet, and Dual booting.

Pre-requisite: Install Preware
PreWare is an app store for homebrew apps that are not on webOS App Catalog, just like 3rd party markets on android or Cydia on iOS. For installation, you can follow Internals Wiki. To summarize, you would either need Official HP SDK and using the webOS Quick Install tool, or you can even use using a standalone installer.
1. Install Meta doctor
Refer to Guide: Set up Meta-Doctor
Summary of what you need to do:
  • On Mac OS X or Linux, install Git and Java runtime, install Palm Novacom software, and download the meta-doctor scripts.
  • Download and run the webOS Doctor.
  • Create an ext3fs partition on your device (chrooting), ideally it should be large enough to accomodate a Ubuntu install, 4gb min.
  • Then mount the ext3fs partition when your device boots. (More instructions at the PreCentral forums).
2. UbuntuChroot
Refer to Guide: UbuntuChroot
Summary:
  • In PreWare, make sure the WebOS Internals Testing Feeds are enabled.
  • Install Xecutah and Ubuntu 11.04 CHroot.
  • Run XServer.
  • Return to Xecutah and tap Ubuntu 11.04 Chroot.
Enabling Graphical Ubuntu.
If you made it to here, you will have full access to Ubuntu CLI. To get the graphical interface, use apt-get install to install Ubuntu packages. Run either of the following:
apt-get install icewm Xfce
apt-get install icewm LXDE
Running Gnome, KDE
You can install your favorite GUI its just that they are more resource hungry (more prominently RAM) and you don’t really want to kill your tablet.
App compatibility
When downloading an app, just look for ARM compatible ones. If you are a developer & find an open source app that doesn’t have a ARM binary, you can always build it for ARM architecture.
