Toshiba rounded-off 2011 year with some of its best TVs in years, and the company has started 2012 in the same vein, with the 46YL863. Staggeringly price considering that it still has features that befit a top-of-the-line set, it seems a steal on the face of it. We see no reason why a TV shouldn't look the part, too; a 46in TV, no matter how slender, is still going to take up a chunk of space. Thankfulle the Toshiba delivers on that front, too-it's just 3cm deep and great for wall-mounting.

Interface and Setup
There are four HDMI connections, two USB inputs, integrated wi-fi plus an ethernet connection, digital audio and headphone outputs and many of the other usual suspects besides. It's DLNA certified for multimedia streaming, too, and you can even turn an external HDD in to a PVR simply by connecting it to one of the USB connections.

The interface uses an intuitive new layout that makes it easy to navigate the huge amount of content and features at your disposal. You'll even find a built-in test pattern fo tweaking the finer details of your picture. Resolution+ aims to improve the sharpness and detail of standard def-content, while Active Vision M800, Toshiba's motion proccessing tech, proves a little unnatural for us in smooth' mode but' standard does make things a little more stable.

The standart selection of analogue and Freeview HD tuners is present and correct, the latter delivering a quality performance. Edges are't quite as robust as the very best, but vivid colours and decent detail ensure were happy what we see on screen. The HD channels ratchet up the quality a notch too, making for a solid off-air introduction.

CEVO Engine picture proccessor fires up. It works with the new PRO-LED “hybrid” local-dimming LED backlight, which combines both edge-lit and ‘direct’ backlighting to optimise contrast levels. This shows in scenes where the light delivers shadow, the Toshiba doing a good job of applying contrast. And it certainly makes for a punchy image, too with birht colours set against deep black levels. Colours are painted in border strokes here than on other sets, meaning you don't quite get the same level of subtlety, but it's a picture that commands attention with its bold hues.

It's worth noting its adeptness with standard-def DVD pictures, too the picture processing doing a decent job of tidying up edge and presenting clean detailed images. While fast action is largely confidently dealt with, there is on occasion the odd slip this set's grip isn't quite as fast as some. But it's a minor point that's almost moot, like any little gripes with the 46YL863.

The 3D glasses - active-shutter and rechargeable via USB - seem last-gen in style and size, the quality of the 3D TV performance has move forward, in line with rivals, to something that's perfectly watchable.

Toshiba Places is the company's Smart TV offering and very clever. There's a place for video, one or music for social, and this order makes it easy to see what's on offer. The selection is much smaller than its rivals here and doesn't include Skype, Netflix or much catch-up TV, but there's Acetrax for films, BBC iPlayer, Aupeo and iConcerts for music, Facebook and DLNA media streaming.

The 46YL863 includes a huge range of picture adjustment, plus a built-in test pattern to help you manualy adjust things to your taste. You can connect the company's TPA-1 KIT, a USB-based calibrator that works in conjunction with the automated test pattern process built into the set, to configure your picture for you. Set it in the action and results prove decent enough - but you will have to spend thae necessary £200 for the privilege.

The 46YL863 is Toshiba's flagship TV and does the position justice, yet it weights in the best part of 1000 cheaper than rivals' top dogs. It might lack the odd frill, and gives away little here and there in performance, but its's still a massive bargain.

Toshiba Introduces new 6.1-Inch Display at 498 PPI capable of 2560 x 1600.

The screen you see above is a 6.1-inch LCD Toshiba hopes will make its way into tablet devices. That’s an unusual size for tablets, which are typically 7 or 10-inches. However, some manufacturers may want to consider using it due to the resolution and image quality the LCD panel can achieve.

Toshiba has managed to squeeze 498 pixels per square inch (ppi) into this panel. It can display images at a resolution much higher than 1080p, more specifically it tops out at 2,560 x 1,600. Imagine how good your photographs would look on this thing. Add to that viewing angles of 176 degrees both horizontally and vertically, a contrast ratio of 1000:1, as well as a 61% NTSC color gamut allowing for 16.7 million colors.

This direct-view LCD panel achieves high-definition images with photographic quality, and although the images are displayed in 2D format, they impart a sense of depth and realism.

Toshiba has officially launced a new tablet that will be operated with Android Honeycomb, the Thrive 7.

Based on its name, this tablet will have a 7 inch screen with a resolution 1280X800p, which will be smaller than its predecessor tablets, The Thrive, which has a 10.1-inch screen.

Differences seen through the thin outer design is only 0.48 inches (12mm), the difference with The Thrive is somewhat thick. These tablets is powered by an dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 mobile processor, 1GB of RAM, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, stereo speakers with SRS Labs technology, 5MP camera, 2MP front camera, Mini USB, HDMI Micro, MicroSD card support, 16GB or 32GB of internal memory, and of course, Toshiba's feature that will make this tablet good hands, anti-slip, and stylish.

Toshiba has jumped on the Ultrabook bandwagon — the new class of ultra-portable laptops pushed by Intel with Toshiba Portege series offering up some hefty specs in the form of a quad-core processor, Solid State Drive and a considerable 6GB RAM, officially unveiled at the IFA trade show in Berlin.

Super-svelte notebooks, the Z830 Toshiba series is wrapped in a magnesium body which contains a black hole of impressive hardware including a Intel Core i7 processor. You'll also be able to get 128GB SSD storage along with a mightily impressive 6GB of RAM, there's a 1.3MP webcam and a matte LED display.


Entering the market containing such beauties as the Apple MacBook Air and the Samsung Series 7, the Toshiba Portege Z830 series hopes to steal your heart.

Toshiba Europe has just unveiled its 7 millimeter-thick Android 3.2 AT200 tablet.

Android tablet offering, the Honeycomb 3.2, 10.1-inch AT200. Measuing in at a mere 7.7mm thick, the Toshiba AT200 comes in as one of the thinnest Honeycomb slates yet, making even the anorexic Galaxy Tab 10.1 look like a whale.

Tucked within the tablet is a 1.2GHz TI OMAP 4430 CPU, 5MP and 2MP cameras, and up to 64GB of on-board storage. The new Toshiba offering is decked out with microUSB, microHDMI, and microSD support.


The Toshiba AT200 allows users to enjoy videos at home and while out and about. It features a brilliant 25.7cm (10.1″) high-definition screen that displays pictures with crisp colours and in full detail.

The Toshiba AT200 is scheduled to be released in Europe in the fourth quarter of 2011. The price has not yet been announcedo.

Toshiba is announced the world's first WiFi-enabled SD memory card, the company announced today at the IFA consumer technology show in Berlin.

The new FlashAir card looks outwardly like a standard SDHC memory card and weighs in at a measly 2g. It will initially be available in a capacity of 8GB

Being able to send images and video straight from camera to social media sites or computer seems to us the next logical step in camera memory. Eye-Fi already make use of some very similar technology which sees its cards being able to upload pictures to websites like Flickr.

The cards will be compatible with the 802.11n wireless standard, and backwards-compatible with the b and g variants. Security is provided by WEP, TKIP and AES encryption (WPA and WPA2).

Toshiba is currently seeking Wi-Fi certification for FlashAir in Japan, North America and Europe, and says the first FlashAir cards will go on sale in February 2012. via thinq
